Cycling Challenge - Week 3 - Chile

The Fundraiser

Week 3 is complete and 239.87 kms have been completed in Taiwan, South Africa and Chile (on Rouvy - read more here).

We thought that we would link this Challenge to other countries and find out a bit about what they are doing about the climate crisis. Come back each week to read more about our visits and check on progress against the fundraising challenge.

Next week we will be cycling in Denmark.

The challenge

Chile’s long north–south geography exposes it to varied climate impacts (water stress in the north, glacier retreat in the south). Historically dependent on imported fossil fuels, Chile must decarbonise a growing electricity and mining sector while managing water and land pressures.

What they’re doing

Chile is rapidly building utility-scale solar and wind, promoting energy efficiency, and pursuing a national strategy to become a major exporter of green hydrogen - using abundant solar/wind resources to produce low-carbon fuels for industry and export markets.

Government initiatives

Policies include an Energy Efficiency Law, a coal-phase-out timetable, and a Green Hydrogen Action Plan (2023–2030) to catalyse investment, scale pilot plants, and create regulatory frameworks for hydrogen production and export. Public-private finance (including international partners) is helping build infrastructure and lower project risk.

Where they’re innovating and succeeding

Chile’s combination of world-class solar resources (Atacama Desert), long windy coastline, and political focus on green hydrogen is attracting international investors. Pilot projects for hydrogen and ammonia, and improvements in grid integration and storage, are positioning Chile as a potential renewable-energy exporter as well as a decarboniser of domestic industry.
