Adverse legal climate publicity can affect a companies share price. Why calling companies to account affects them in more ways than one.
A study analysed 108 climate crisis lawsuits around the world between 2005 and 2021 against 98 companies listed in the US and Europe. It found that the filing of a new case or a court decision against a company reduced its expected value by an average of 0.41%.
It found there were two drops. The first being after the law cases were filed and the second, biggest drop, occurred if the company had an unfavourable judgement against them.
And whilst the % figure may look small, for a large company, that’s a lot of $ especially when you have many lawsuits being filed.
